Not Just Beans

by Tawra Jean Kellam
published in 1999
$14.95
http://www.notjustbeans.com

Family cookbooks are nothing new. We’ve all seen more than one or two. But “Not Just Beans” is far better than the average family cookbook.

Kellam has combined 50 years worth of frugal family favorites into this one hefty book. She dedicates the book to her mom Jill Cooper, who she describes as “one of the great tightwads of the world.” Stretching the food budget was necessary to raise two teenagers alone on an income of $500 a month, and Kellam took her mother’s ideas and compiled them into this book.

There’s something here for everyone. These are not fancy recipes that will wow your friends with their elaborate preparation and unusual ingredients, but they are great recipes that you’ll actually be able to cook in your own kitchen without the help of a sous chef. And your friends and family will be more impressed in the long run that you’re consistently able to prepare great meals with what you can get at the local grocery.

Meals and Memories: How to Create Keepsake Cookbooks

By Kathy Steligo
Carlo Press
PO Box 7080

$18.95
http://www.carlopress.com/books

I’ve been reviewing cookbooks for almost 10 years now, and I’ve seen some great ones and some not-so-great ones. Something I’ve wished for many, many times has come to pass. Kathy Steligo has written a practical, easy-to-follow, book instructing people how to make their family’s precious recipes and memories into a cookbook that can be treasured for years to come.

I have always been interested in genealogy and family traditions, as well as cookbooks, so I have often encouraged people to compile their family recipes into a book. But, what often happens is that they get the recipes but forget to add the family stories that make those recipes special to them. Steligo’s book continually reminds people not to forget this all-important step. She also has practical advice on how to gather recipes, standardize formats and organize recipes. Using her book as a guide, you won’t get so bogged down in these details that you forget to add in the joy of family memories.

This book is a necessity for anyone tackling a project like this. She has tons of tips and techniques as well as sources for various items.

The Knoxville Junior League published "Dining in the Smoky Mountain Mist" in 1995 to celebrate their 75th anniversary. This is a beautifully done book with a few choice photographs used repeatedly to emphasize the beauty of the Knoxville area. A number of local restaurants contributed recipes to the book and they are all in one section near the back so you can sample the best the area has to offer. Brunch to tailgating is covered. Proceeds go to the Junior League's projects which focus on children and families at risk.

Generations: A Tradition of Timeless Recipes

"Generations: A Tradition of Timeless Recipes" is from the Junior League of Rockford. The photographs on each chapter divider page feature a color food vignette combined with a black and white historical photograph or clipping or some sort. This is a lovely way to carry the theme of generations throughout the book.

Each divider also has a great food quote, some of which I had never heard. I think my favorite is credited to Lionel Pollane: "Bread deals with living things, with giving life, with growth, with the seed, the grain that nurtures." A close runner-up would be the one on the dessert section which is an Old Russian Proverb that says, "A house is beautiful not because of its wall, but because of its cakes." Even the name of the book came from a quote by Norman Douglas: "The true cook holds in his palm the happiness of mankind, the welfare of generations yet unborn."

The recipes are a mix of traditional and new combinations. Apple soup shares space with beef brisket. One thing is for sure - you'll find something appealing to put on the table.

"For Goodness Taste" from the Junior League of Rochester is the result of three years worth of effort by their cookbook committee and it shows. This is an excellent assortment of recipes. Even living in small-town Kansas, I could easily locate 98% of the ingredients called for, and yet they have offered a number of recipes with nice twists on traditional favorites. I was particularly impressed with the variety of bread recipes offered. Lots of the 400 recipes in this book could easily be made perfect for a family dinner or dressed up for company. Very nicely done!

"Candlelight Celebrations" has a sense of freshness about it. Published by St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Huntsville, Alabama, the book uses the theme of light. The introduction says, "Light is a great theme of all Christianity. We light candles, as a symbol of hope, joy and beauty..." Each chapter beings with a selection from the Book of Common Prayer. Recipes for Shepherd's Bread, Tennessee Stack Cake and Barbecue sauce pay homage to their southern roots while leaving room for new ideas. Proceeds from the book will be used in outreach ministries of the church, both on the local level and in Honduras.
